The Indianapolis Colts have been struggling since the retirement of their star quarterback, Andrew Luck. They’ve had a string of bad luck and poor performances that has led to them being in last place in their division.
The Andrew Luck and His Shocking NFL Retirement Still Haunts the Indianapolis Colts is a blog post that discusses Andrew Luck’s retirement from the NFL. It also mentions how this has affected his former team, the Indianapolis Colts.
Andrew Luck’s retirement from the Indianapolis Colts stunned the whole football world.
The Colts were as shocked and taken aback as the rest of the football world when they learned Andrew Luck, one of the greatest quarterbacks in the game, was retiring only a few weeks before the 2019 season started.
They’d just lost their franchise quarterback and had very little time to find a replacement.
The Indianapolis Colts are still reeling from the loss of Andrew Luck.
Fast forward to 2021, and the Colts, headed by GM Chris Ballard, have done an excellent job of rebuilding the team. They got through the 2019 season with Jacoby Brissett as quarterback before signing Philip Rivers in free agency the following summer.
In 2020, Rivers led the Colts to an 11-win season, bringing them back to the playoffs for the first time since Luck’s injury.
While Rivers hasn’t ruled out a comeback to the NFL this season, the Colts have moved on to a new quarterback after their early playoff loss. Ballard took advantage of a tumultuous scenario in Philadelphia by bringing together head coach Frank Reich and his close buddy Carson Wentz. When Reich was offensive coordinator for the Eagles in 2017, the two enjoyed a lot of success together and have been in contact ever since.
Wentz had a foot injury during training camp this summer, putting the reunion on hold. However, due to some miraculous surgery by a Colts doctor, Wentz looks to be ready to play Week 1.
Even yet, Luck’s absence hangs big over the Indianapolis Colts.
Any NFL general manager could not have predicted Andrew Luck’s retirement.

It’s been just over two years since Luck chose to put up his cleats, and NFL general managers must be shaking their heads.
For what it’s worth, this isn’t due to bad luck. Years of playing behind a bad offensive line took a toll on the former No. 1 overall selection. Throughout his NFL career, Luck had been dealing with a lot of discomfort and was at danger of brain damage if he kept taking hits.
There’s nothing wrong with Luck’s decision to leave at the time he did.
Even so, it placed Ballard and the rest of the Colts organization in an unusually difficult position. They expected to be Super Bowl contenders in 2019, but had to make do with Brissett at the helm. Getting Wentz in the offseason was a welcome relief from the circumstances. They did, however, have to give up a conditional first-round selection in the process.
It’ll be difficult for the Colts’ front staff not to fantasize about “what might have been” if Luck had chosen to stay for a few more years. He was one of the league’s best athletes at quarterback and had the appearance of a potential Hall of Famer.
With that stated, the company has made a commitment to Wentz in the hopes of saving the Colts’ era of football.
Wentz is a former No. 2 overall selection who has shown he has the potential to be an MVP candidate in the past. He, too, has dealt with ailments throughout his football career, much like Luck.
If Wentz leads the Colts to a Super Bowl victory in the future years, they may be able to forget about Luck and how that experience turned out. If Wentz fails to do so, the Colts will certainly remember this decade as the most significant “what if” in franchise history.
