Dish Network Corp. has enlisted the assistance of International Business Machines Corp. to run its upcoming 5G network, a move that the company views as critical to attracting corporate clients to its wireless business.
By next summer, the long-running satellite-TV provider expects its new 5G network to reach at least 20% of the US population. To develop the network, it has partnered with more than 35 businesses.
The details of Dish’s multiyear agreement with IBM have not been revealed.
In 2019, Dish entered the wireless market in the United States, acquiring about 9 million former Sprint Corp. subscribers as part of a government-brokered agreement that enabled T-Mobile US Inc. to purchase Sprint. Boost Mobile, Ting, and Republic Wireless are among Dish’s consumer mobile brands.

Dish has been pursuing 5G spectrum frequencies for years, with the goal of becoming a strong wireless rival.
Dish may target a variety of sectors, including logistics and healthcare, according to Chief Network Officer Marc Rouanne. He wouldn’t disclose which businesses are testing Dish’s 5G service or when it would be accessible to the general public.
IBM will offer orchestration software, which aids network operators in managing and automating the delivery of 5G services, such as fine-tuning speed levels or coverage regions for particular clients. For example, an autonomous-car business may need low latency, or fast reaction times, for fleets of vehicles in certain cities, while an energy company may be OK with longer response times across a larger coverage area.
Mr. Rouanne said, “Today, it’s like a freeway, and once you’re on it, you have no precedence over anybody else.” He went on to say that IBM’s software can split the highway into bespoke lanes for each client, enabling them to “steer the service according to the sub-requirements.” network’s
According to an IBM spokesperson, IBM’s software will operate on Amazon Web Services. In April, Amazon.com Inc. said it would offer cloud services for Dish’s 5G network.
According to Patrick Filkins, a research manager at research company International Data Corp., 5G network providers are rapidly embracing cloud-computing infrastructure, which makes it simpler for them to roll out new workloads and use cases. Software does not have to be bound to a particular piece of hardware. As a result, he claims, 5G networks are more flexible and can be controlled in ways that 4G and older-generation networks cannot.
According to Mr. Filkins, every major telecom operator implementing 5G has aspirations for orchestration software for network customisation.
